SUPER ROOM

SUPER ROOM

CAMBRIDGE
Start: 2014. Completion: Sept 2015. Contract Value: undisclosed. Contract Type: Extension and remodelling

Our clients purchased a large arts-and-crafts style house in central Cambridge which suffered from a poor rear extension with a number of structural defects. Following a competitive interview process, CDC was appointed to consider options for renovating the whole house to provide a warm family home. Working closely with the clients via 3-dimensional images, CDC explored various options for improving the house layout, and it was agreed that the existing failing extension should be replaced with a larger, better connected space. This offered opportunities for bringing light deeper into the house, increasing views into the garden, and providing a new kitchen/ dining area as a hub to family life. Altering the heating and drainage system of the house allowed a new kitchen servery, preparation area and larder to take the place of a redundant tank room. This freed up space elsewhere, allowing the formation of a ‘snug’ room with built-in furniture, and a boot-room/ utility area. A drop-down screen allows the space to be used for entertainment, whilst large glazed doors slide back to allow a lovely direct connection to the mature garden.
Upstairs, a new dormer window has improved head-heights and light to the loft rooms. At first floor level a master-suite bedroom, dressing area and bathroom extend the accommodation, and the family bathroom is improved in layout and functionality. Throughout the house, new doors, flooring, decoration and lighting greatly improve the quality of the interior, whilst storage is discretely provided where needed. Externally, windows, render and roofing are restored to ensure the handsome character of the original house is retained to the street. To the rear of the house, the new crisp contemporary extension transforms the house’s relationship to the garden and provides a new ‘super-room’ for family activities.
